What is LASIK?
LASIK is an acronym that stands for Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis. In order for the eye to focus light clearly on the retina, the cornea must be of the proper curvature. In LASIK, very minute quantities of the patient’s corneal tissue are removed by laser, predictably altering the shape of the cornea and in turn correcting the refractive error that caused the patient’s nearsightedness, farsightedness, and/or astigmatism. Modern All Laser Wavefront Optimized LASIK may even help patients achieve better vision than is possible with glasses or contacts.

ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens)
One of the greatest advances in vision correction in recent years has been the introduction of the EVO ICL following FDA approval. This highly advanced implantable lens is designed to treat nearsightedness and astigmatism in patients for whom LASIK or PRK may not be the preferred treatment option.
The FDA approved the EVO ICL in 2022, although the technology has been used internationally for more than 10 years. To date, over 3 million ICLs have been implanted worldwide.
Prior to the EVO ICL, an earlier version of this lens was available. With significant engineering improvements, the new lens has become easier to implant and more predictable in its outcomes, contributing to its growing popularity. Bladeless LASIK Technology
During LASIK, a hinged flap is created in the cornea to allow access for the vision correction. In the past, the corneal flap was created by a mechanical device, which used a blade (microkeratome). Today, we offer our Spector Eye Care patients entirely blade-free LASIK using a Femtosecond Laser to create the corneal flap. Using this bladeless LASIK procedure, the Femtosecond laser delivers millions of tiny, micron-sized bubbles that gently separate the layers of corneal tissue. This creates a customized corneal flap of the desired thickness, size, orientation, and location, adding a higher level of safety and precision. This unparalleled level of control also allows more patients to qualify as LASIK candidates and virtually eliminates many of the complications associated with the past mechanical approach.
